Shiva of the Sahyadris
Presiding deities: Lord Shiva as Bhimashankar — a Swayambhu (self-manifested) linga, worshipped with Goddess Kamalaja, a form of Parvati.
ॐ नमः शिवाय भीमाशंकराय
Bhimashankar is the sixth Jyotirlinga, set deep in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats. According to the Shiva Purana, the demon Bhima — son of Tripurasura — terrorised the gods and sages of this region. Moved by the prayers of the rishis, Lord Shiva manifested here, fought a fierce battle and destroyed the demon. At the devotees’ request he settled forever as the Jyotirlinga Bhimashankar. The sweat that poured from Shiva’s body after the battle is said to have formed the Bhima River, which rises here and flows south-east to join the Krishna. The temple sits within the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the rare Indian Giant Squirrel (Shekru), Maharashtra’s state animal.

History & heritage
A Hemadpanthi shrine in the clouds
The present temple traces its core to the 13th-century Hemadpanthi (Yadava-era) style — black stone fitted without mortar, in the old Nagara tradition. The shrine was significantly expanded and renovated in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis, the powerful Peshwa statesman, who added the Sabhamandap (assembly hall) and the distinctive shikhara. Chimaji Appa of the Maratha Empire also contributed to the temple, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself is recorded as a devout worshipper here, granting endowments for its upkeep.
A great bell at the temple, in the Indo-Portuguese tradition, is believed to have been brought by Chimaji Appa after his victory over the Portuguese at Vasai (Bassein) in 1739. The temple is one of only two Jyotirlinga sites — the other being Kashi — where Tripuri Purnima (Kartik Purnima) holds special significance, commemorating Shiva’s slaying of the Tripura demons. The surrounding Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, declared in 1985, protects the lush, ancient forests that make this the most verdant of all Jyotirlingas, especially in the monsoon.
Darshan & rituals
Aarti & darshan timings
The temple opens before dawn for the Mangala Aarti and closes after the night Shayan Aarti. Timings shift slightly in summer and on festival days — here is the regular daily rhythm.

|---|---|
| Morning darshan | 5:30 AM – 12:00 PM |
| Evening darshan | 4:00 PM – 9:30 PM |
| Shayan Aarti | 9:30 PM |
Timings are indicative and change on festival days, during the monsoon, and with temple advisories. The mountain road and trek routes can be affected by heavy rain. Always confirm before travel — message us and we will share the latest schedule for your dates.
Dress code & what to carry
Modest traditional attire is recommended. Men — dhoti-kurta, or trousers with a shirt. Women — saree, salwar-kameez or churidar. Shorts and sleeveless tops are discouraged. Footwear is removed before entering. Photography and mobile phones are not allowed inside the sanctum; photography is permitted in the outer courtyard. Carry light woollens in winter and the monsoon, when the hills turn cool and misty.
